A variety of interests - dueling groups of Indian tribes who run casinos, racetrack owners, cardrooms, Vegas gambling interests, offshore Internet operations - are seeking a deal to let this lucrative industry take off. As the Legislature considers legalizing online poker, one would expect the debate to center on straightforward questions: What regulations will prevent a problem gambler from, say, squandering his life savings from an easy chair? How will the proceeds be taxed? One would even expect a coalition to rise up against it - based on moral or at least addiction issues.
